Declutter: Photos, Files, Mail ("the app", "we") helps you review and remove photos, videos, apps and email you no longer want, merge duplicate contacts, back up your phone book, and keep private photos in an encrypted Vault. This page explains what the app accesses, why, and what it does not do with that access.
The short version: your photos, files and contacts are processed on your device and are never uploaded to a server we operate. If you connect a mailbox, the app talks directly to your email provider, reads message headers only, and stores sign-in credentials encrypted on your device. We have no Declutter account system.
Information the app accesses
- Photos and videos: to show storage usage, find similar photos and videos, screenshots and large files, compress media you choose, and move items into the Vault. Read from your device's media library and never uploaded anywhere.
- Installed apps: to list your apps with their size and icon so you can decide which to uninstall. This list stays on the device.
- Contacts: only for Merge Duplicate Contacts and Backup Phone Book, when you open them. Contacts are read and, for a backup, written to a file you choose. They are never sent to us or any third party.
- Biometric unlock: optionally used to open the Vault. Android's own system prompt handles verification; the app never receives fingerprint or face data.
Email accounts
Connecting a mailbox is optional. When you connect one, the app communicates directly between your device and your email provider (Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Apple, AOL or the IMAP server you enter). No email data passes through a server we operate.
- What is read: message headers only (sender, subject, date, size, read and starred status, and unsubscribe headers), used to group mail by sender and show counts. Message bodies and attachments are not read.
- Sender logos: to show a sender's logo, the app asks Google's public favicon service for the icon of the sender's domain (for example, uber.com). Only that domain name is sent: never your address, the sender's full address or any message content. Senders using common personal email providers (such as Gmail or Outlook.com) are skipped.
- What the app can do, only when you ask: move messages to Trash or Deleted Items, archive them, mark them read, create a rule or filter to block a sender (Gmail and Outlook), and send an unsubscribe request on your behalf. Mail is never permanently deleted by the app.
- Credentials: Gmail access tokens are held in memory only. Microsoft refresh tokens and IMAP app passwords are stored on your device using Android's encrypted storage. Removing an account in the app deletes its stored credentials. You can also revoke access at any time from your Google or Microsoft account settings.
Google user data. Declutter's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Gmail data is used only to provide the inbox clean-up features you see in the app. It is not used for advertising, not sold, not transferred to anyone else, and not read by humans.
Secure Vault
Photos and videos you move into the Vault are encrypted and stored only on your device, behind a PIN you set. Vault contents are never transmitted anywhere. Uninstalling the app, or losing the device without a backup of your own, permanently deletes anything in the Vault. We have no copy and cannot recover it.
Analytics
The app uses Google Analytics for Firebase to understand, in aggregate, how many people use the app, which screens are opened, how the app was installed, and when it crashes or misbehaves. This includes device and app information such as device model, OS version, app version, country, and an app-instance identifier. It never includes your photos, files, contacts or email. See Firebase's privacy information.
Advertising
The free version of the app shows ads served by Google AdMob. Google may collect device and advertising identifiers to serve and measure ads, under Google's advertising policies. You can reset or delete your advertising ID in Android's settings. Premium subscribers see no ads.
In-app purchases
Premium and Vault Storage subscriptions are handled entirely by Google Play Billing. We never see or store payment details; Google tells the app only which subscriptions you own.
What we don't do
- We don't operate a server that receives your photos, files, contacts or email.
- We don't require you to create a Declutter account.
- We don't sell personal data.
- We don't read the content of your emails.
Children's privacy
The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.
Your data, your control
You can remove items from the Vault, disconnect any mailbox, revoke the app's permissions in Android's Settings, or uninstall the app to remove everything it stored on your device, including the Vault and saved email credentials.
